Buying a kaftan should be simple, but a loose fit and online shopping can make it surprisingly easy to get wrong. These guides explain how to measure, what to read before you buy online, your consumer rights, how to shop second-hand and sustainably, and how to pack kaftans for travel.

The guides in this section

Before you buy: a checklist

  1. Where will I wear it, and how often?
  2. Does the fabric suit my climate?
  3. Can I care for it the way the label says?
  4. Do the length, width and arm openings suit me?
  5. Is the fabric sheer, and is there a lining?
  6. What is the return policy?
  7. Is the seller genuine, with clear contact details?

Your consumer rights

The ACCC explains that consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law apply to goods bought from Australian businesses, online or in store. Goods must be of acceptable quality, match their description and be fit for any purpose you made known. For a major problem, you can usually choose a refund or replacement; for a minor problem, the business can choose to repair, replace or refund. Guarantees still apply to sale items, but not to faults you were told about before buying.

Change of mind is different. A business doesn't have to refund or exchange if you simply change your mind, unless its policy says it will. Read the policy before ordering, especially for online purchases.

Shopping safely online

Scamwatch, run by the National Anti-Scam Centre, warns about fake online stores. Be cautious of prices that seem too good to be true, missing contact details, very new websites and requests for unusual payment methods. Use payment methods with some protection, and keep records of your order.

Measure, don't guess

"One size" kaftans still vary in length, width and arm openings. Compare garment measurements with your own, and double flat-width measurements to get circumference. Petite and tall shoppers should pay particular attention to length.

Buying less, choosing better

Second-hand shopping, careful care and choosing versatile pieces all help kaftans last longer and reduce waste. Inspect second-hand pieces for stains, holes, fading and missing beads, and treat unlabelled older pieces gently.

Prices

We don't publish prices because they vary widely with fabric, maker, embellishment and season. Compare the details that matter to you, such as fibre content, construction, care and measurements, rather than headline prices.

We don't recommend shops

We don't rank, review or recommend shops or labels. Any featured listings on this site are clearly labelled and kept separate from our guides.

Gifts and occasions

Kaftans are popular gifts because many styles fit a range of sizes. Check length and width, choose a fabric that suits the recipient's climate and care habits, and keep the receipt in case the store's policy allows exchanges. For weddings and cultural celebrations, consider the dress code and any colour conventions before buying.

Handmade and traditional pieces

Many kaftans are made by small designers and artisans using block printing, embroidery and hand weaving. Handmade pieces can vary slightly from photos, which is part of their character. Look for sellers who describe who made a garment, where and how, and who give clear fibre, care and measurement details. Clear descriptions are a good sign of a seller who cares about their products and their customers.

Keeping records

Save order confirmations, receipts, product descriptions and photos of any faults. If something goes wrong, these records make it much easier to explain the problem to the business and, if needed, to seek help. The ACCC has guidance on contacting a business to fix a problem, including what to say and what to do if the business doesn't respond. Being calm, specific and clear about the outcome you want, such as a repair, replacement or refund, usually gets the quickest result.

Five habits for kaftans you will love

  1. Start with where you will wear it, then choose shape and fabric.
  2. Match fabric to your climate and to the care you are happy to give.
  3. Check the measurements, especially length, not just the size label.
  4. Read the care label before you buy and before you wash.
  5. Look for a UPF rating if sun protection matters.

About these guides

Kaftan Dresses is an independent information site about choosing, styling and caring for kaftans in Australia. We aren't a shop, fashion label, designer or retailer, and we don't recommend particular businesses. Our guides are general information written in our own words, with official and expert sources listed on each page. We never invent prices, statistics, quotes or reviews.

How we keep these guides current

We review each guide against its sources and show the date it was last checked. Standards and consumer rules change from time to time. If you notice something out of date, please tell us through our contact page, and we'll check and correct it.

Use the kaftan finder

Our free kaftan finder suggests fabric, length, neckline and care based on the occasion, your climate and how much care you want to give. It runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you choose is sent anywhere.
