Washing cotton, linen and rayon kaftans

Everyday kaftans get worn and washed often. A few simple habits keep them soft, bright and the right size.

Cotton, linen and rayon kaftans are wardrobe workhorses for warm weather, at the beach, around the house and on holiday. They're generally easier to care for than silk, but each fibre has its quirks. Washing them the right way keeps colours bright and stops them shrinking or losing shape.

This guide is general information written in our own words. We don't recommend particular shops, labels or products, and we never quote prices: they vary widely, so compare for yourself.

Read the care label

ACCC Product Safety explains that clothing sold in Australia must carry care instructions under the Consumer Goods (Care Labelling) Information Standard 2023, in English words, international symbols, or both. The five basic symbols are:

  • Washtub: washing. Dots or a number show maximum temperature; a hand means hand wash; lines under the tub mean a gentler cycle.
  • Triangle: bleaching. A crossed triangle means don't bleach.
  • Square: drying. A circle inside means tumble drying; lines can show line or flat drying.
  • Iron: ironing. Dots show the maximum heat setting.
  • Circle: professional care, such as dry cleaning.

A cross through any symbol means "don't".

Washing cotton kaftans

Many cotton kaftans can go in the machine. Wash in cool or warm water as the label directs, with similar colours. Bright prints may bleed in the first few washes, so wash them separately at first. A gentle cycle and a mesh bag help protect tassels, embroidery and fine voile.

Washing linen kaftans

Linen often tolerates machine washing on a gentle cycle, but check the label. Avoid overloading the machine, which increases creasing. Linen softens with each wash, which is part of its charm.

Washing rayon (viscose) kaftans

Rayon is weaker when wet and can shrink or distort with heat and agitation. Many rayon garments are labelled cold gentle wash or hand wash. Use cool water, a gentle cycle or hand washing, and avoid wringing. Reshape the kaftan while damp.

Drying

Line or flat drying in the shade is gentle on all three fibres and reduces fading. Hang kaftans from the shoulders or fold them over a line to avoid peg marks on the front. Tumble drying can cause shrinkage, especially for rayon and cotton; only use the dryer if the label allows, on a low setting.

Ironing and steaming

Cotton and linen tolerate higher iron settings than rayon, but always check the dots on the iron symbol. Iron linen while slightly damp for the smoothest finish. For rayon, use a low setting on the reverse side. A steamer is quick and gentle for all three.

Preventing fading

Wash inside out, use cool water where possible, and dry in the shade. Strong sun fades bright prints over time.

Stains

Treat stains promptly. Blot rather than rub, and test any stain remover on a hidden seam. Sunscreen marks are common on beach kaftans; rinse after wearing and follow the label for washing.

How often to wash

Washing too often wears fabric out. A kaftan worn briefly as a cover-up may just need an airing or a rinse; one worn all day in the heat will need a full wash.

Machine settings explained

A gentle or delicate cycle uses less agitation and a slower spin, which is kinder to rayon, voile and embroidered pieces. A wool or hand-wash cycle is gentler still. Lower spin speeds reduce creasing. A mesh laundry bag protects tassels and trims from tangling.

Detergent and softener

Use a mild detergent, measured as directed; too much can leave residue. Fabric softener can reduce absorbency in cotton and linen, so many people skip it for kaftans worn in the heat.

Restoring shape

If a rayon kaftan has lost shape, gently reshape it while damp and dry it flat. Avoid hanging heavy wet rayon from the shoulders, which can stretch it.

Use the kaftan finder

Our free kaftan finder suggests fabric, length, neckline and care based on the occasion, your climate and how much care you're happy to give a garment. It also flags when to look for a UPF rating if you'll be in strong sun. It runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you choose is sent anywhere. Use it as a starting point before you shop, and always check the product's own details and care label.

Where our information comes from

Factual statements in our guides are based on official and expert sources, including ACCC Product Safety and the Federal Register of Legislation for care labelling, ARPANSA for sun protective clothing, the ACCC for consumer rights, Scamwatch for online shopping safety, and museum and encyclopaedia sources for history. We list them at the end of each page. Styling and care tips are general and written in our own words. Rules change, so check the sources before relying on any detail.

A good kaftan in one sentence

A good kaftan suits where you'll wear it, is made from a fabric that matches your climate and care routine, hangs well at your height, and makes you feel comfortable and like yourself. Everything else in this guide supports those few goals.

Questions to ask before you buy

Before buying any kaftan, ask yourself: where will I wear it, how often, what will I wear with it, how will I wash it, and does it fit my height and shape? Answering honestly helps avoid kaftans that sit unworn in the wardrobe. It also makes it easier to compare options and to spend wisely, whatever your budget.

Understanding care symbols

The five basic care symbols are a washtub for washing, a triangle for bleaching, a square for drying, an iron for ironing and a circle for professional care such as dry cleaning. Dots usually show temperature or heat, lines under a symbol suggest a gentler process, and a cross means "don't". ACCC Product Safety explains that Australian care labels may use English words, these symbols, or both. Learning them takes a few minutes and protects your favourite pieces.

Comfort in Australian summers

Much of Australia has long, hot summers, and humidity in the north can be high. Loose garments let air move around the body, which many people find more comfortable in the heat than fitted clothes. Breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen and rayon tend to feel cooler than heavy synthetics. In hot, humid places, quick-drying fabrics and loose weaves help. Wherever you are, sun protection still matters when you're outdoors.

Buying gifts

Kaftans make popular gifts because many styles fit a range of sizes. Even so, check the length and width measurements, choose a fabric that suits the recipient's climate and lifestyle, and keep the receipt. Remember that change-of-mind returns depend on the store's policy, so check it before you buy.

Keeping your kaftans organised

Store kaftans where you can see them, so you remember to wear them. Lightweight pieces hang well on slim or padded hangers; heavy, beaded pieces are better folded. Group them by occasion, such as beach, day and evening, so getting dressed is quick. At the end of summer, wash and store them properly so they're ready for next season.

Supporting makers

Many kaftans are made by small designers and artisans using traditional techniques such as block printing, embroidery and hand weaving. If you value these skills, look for sellers who explain who made a garment, where and how. Clear descriptions are a good sign of a seller who cares about their products.

A note on accessibility

Kaftans can be a comfortable choice for people with limited mobility, sensory sensitivities or medical devices, because they are loose and easy to put on. Front-opening styles, soft necklines, and fabrics without scratchy trims can make dressing easier. Check measurements carefully if you use a wheelchair, as long hems can catch in wheels.

Key points

  • Follow the five care symbols; a cross means do not.
  • Wash bright prints separately at first.
  • Rayon is weaker when wet; wash gently and cool.
  • Dry in the shade to prevent fading and shrinkage.

Frequently asked questions

Will my cotton kaftan shrink?

It may if washed or dried hotter than the label allows. Follow the label and avoid the dryer if unsure.

Why did my rayon kaftan shrink?

Rayon can shrink or lose shape with heat and agitation. Gentle, cool washing and flat or line drying help.

Can I tumble dry linen?

Only if the label allows. Line drying in the shade is gentler and reduces shrinkage.

What do the care symbols mean?

The five main symbols cover washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional care. A cross means do not.
