Fashion Rules: To Follow Or Break?

Fashion Rules, Laloom Kaftans

Douglass McArthur famously said that “Rules are mostly made to be broken and are too often for the lazy to hide behind”.  But when it comes to fashion, are rules made to be broken or are they a handy way to organise your wardrobe?  Only you can decide the answer to that!

To help you separate your style rules from your fashion myths, here’s our breakdown of some of the most famous fashion rules.  Some are fashion rules to follow and some are fashion rules to break!

The Fashion Rules To Follow

Fashion Rule 1: Price Points And Labels Aren’t Important If You’ve Found A Style You Love

It’s easy to get bogged down by designer labels and a desire to keep up with your peers (both real and those imaginary ones on social media) by spending a fortune on your clothes, but it really doesn’t have to be that way.  What is important is that you’re investing in quality pieces that suit your body shape and your day to day style.  No one cares about the price point of your outfit or the label inside it: they care about whether you’re wearing an outfit that makes you look and feel fantastic.  And you can’t put a price on that!

Fashion Rule 2: Want Your Outfit To Feel Happy? Where Something Bright!

Wearing black is almost fetishized in the fashion community: it’s the answer to every stylish occasion and wearing black is one of those classic fashion rules everyone talks about.  But sometimes wearing black from head to toe can be a bit, well, boring.  And who wants to look boring?  If you want to feel happy and energized in your outfit then leave the black behind and invest in some colour instead!  Our kaftan fashion options are vibrant and colour-filled for a reason: so that they’ll put a smile on your face and make you feel happy every time you wear them.

Fashion Rule 3: Dress With Confidence

The one thing guaranteed to always turn heads is someone that is confident in themselves and the way they dress.  These women often don’t follow any fashion rules but they look fantastic anyway!  Let your personality shine through in the way you dress: if you love floaty, oversized kaftans then wear them all year round.  If you have a passion for colour then wear a rainbow.  Do you: nobody does it better!

The Fashion Rules To Break

Fashion Rule 1: Don’t Mix Your Metals

A classic fashion rule that is often quoted, but made to be broken, is that you should never wear gold and silver jewelry at the same time.  The metals weren’t made to be mixed!  In reality though, wearing a variety of different jewellery colours and styles together can help to add depth, texture and interest to your outfit.  Mix things up and take a ‘more is more’ approach when looking at your jewellery box: you’ll be amazed at the impact a bold jewellery decision can have on your ensemble.

Fashion Rule 2: Don’t Wear Long Dresses If You’re Short

Petite women are often being told that they shouldn’t wear long or maxi dresses: but just because you’re short doesn’t mean you love your legs!  There’s no reason why petite women can’t wear long length kaftans or dresses, you just have to ensure that they fit you correctly.  In fact, longer length dresses can often help to elongate your body.  The key is to make sure that your dress fits you correctly: it shouldn’t be trailing along the floor, but a good tailor can ensure that your dress sits along the top of your shoes no matter what your height is.

Fashion Rule 3: Dress According To Your Age

Age is just a number, and what does dressing according to your age really mean anyway?  Are you supposed to hit a magic number and then lose your interest in fashion and style?  Dress according to your personality, not your age.  If you like to wear conservative clothing or have a passion for tailoring then that’s great.  If you prefer to follow all the latest trends then that’s awesome too: the key is to wear what makes you feel good rather than what you think society wants you to wear because of how many birthdays you’ve had.  The truth is, no one really care’s anyway!
